?Kiss or Handshake? How to Know What to Do on the First Date

A first date is always a bit of a nail-biter. After all, you and your new friend find yourselves in a somewhat awkward situation; you are trying to see if perhaps you enjoy each other’s company so much that eventually you will begin dating and maybe – some time in the future – even contemplate marriage. Yet at this point in time you are just trying to make it through the heart pounding activity that is the first date, and you may or may not know what to do. Should you shake hands? Should you kiss? Should you hold open the door or pay the bill?

Follow these tips and you will be able to relax – at least a little bit:

Ask your friend out for a date. While this may sound like common sense, it has happened to frequently that one person thinks they are on a date while the other thinks she or he is just having a nice dinner with a friend. So be up front about your intentions!

Make yourself look presentable. This is another common sense bit of advice, but you would be surprised to know how many folks overdress for the occasion. This is not the time to dig in the back of your closet for the clothes you have not worn since high school or the college days to see if they still fit. Psychedelic t-shirts have been out of fashion for a few decades now, and acid washed jeans followed suit soon thereafter. Ladies, this is not the time to dress in something skimpy that leaves little – if anything – to the imagination. If you do, your date may have a hard time keeping his mind out of the gutter, and you will feel more like a piece of meat being appraised than a woman being appreciated. Dress in well fitting clothes you feel comfortable in, which are clean, go well together, and express a sense of who you really are.

If you did the asking, be prepared to foot the bill. It is only fair that the person who suggested the five star restaurants is also the person who will pick up the bill when it comes. Get some cash from the ATM to make sure you are liquid, and do not rely on plastic to carry you through the evening.

Should the gentleman bring his date some flowers? This is tricky question. While ladies generally like flowers, they are a bit awkward to handle when you meet at a restaurant or show. For the first date, only bring flowers if you are picking her up at her home and you have the time for her to put them in a vase.

Now for the greeting – should you shake hands or kiss? As a matter of fact, a quick yet chaste kiss on the cheek is acceptable. For old-fashioned gents, a kiss on the back of the hand is perfectly acceptable and might actually win you some brownie points. If she leads the way by holding out her hands for a shake do not push the issue.

At the end of the evening, you should be able to repeat the kiss – perhaps this time on the lips. Once again, the lady should lead the way and the gentleman should never, ever try to go in for a big kissing scene!

Good manners should be expected. Ladies, do not gasp in surprise or dismay as your gent holds open doors for your, and gentlemen, when you hold open a door it means that the lady walks through it first, and you follow her. Don’t just plough ahead and leave her to trail behind you in your wake as you hold doors as an afterthought.

As you can see, with a little bit of preparation and bit of finesse you will be able to woo your date and have a good time doing it. You no longer need to worry anxiously if you are coming across too forward or perhaps too reserved. Just relax, be yourself, and enjoy the moment! After all, a first date only happens once in a dating relationship and you want to make sure to leave a lasting impression that you and your date will be able to talk about at your silver anniversary dinner!
